Dizziness and Vertigo

What is the difference?

  • Dizziness is a feeling of light headedness or imbalance.

    • Dizziness typically results from blood pressure changes, medication side effects, heart rate changes, or changing positions too quickly.

  • Vertigo is a sensation of you or the room spinning.

    • Vertigo comes from a complication with your inner ear, also called your vestibular system, or from your brain itself.

What can Physical Therapy do to help?

  • PT can help with both dizziness and vertigo by challenging you in a safe way to improve your balance.

    • Balance comes from what your eyes see, what your feet feel, and what your inner ear is doing.

  • PT can address vertigo by determining the cause of the vertigo and treating it with movements of your head and body.

    • If the vertigo is caused by dislodged crystals in your inner ear, PT can usually improve your symptoms in one visit, but it may take more to completely resolve the issue.

    • Sometimes it is necessary to refer you to a provider for further testing to determine the cause.

    • If you go to the doctor for vertigo and they give you a medicine called Meclizine, it may impact PT testing if you have taken it within 24 hours.
