Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Leah Mentele, DPT is trained in:

Pelvic floor issues, like leaking, pain, and prolapse, can get in the way of life from simple things like laughing and sneezing to limiting your ability to exercise without symptoms and even can affect your intimate relationships. That’s where pelvic floor physical therapy comes in to help you return to all activities with improved function!

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy looks different than it did 20 years ago! Have you tried kegels or does your doctor recommend just doing kegels to improve leakage? Physical therapy is more than kegels alone - we look at the whole picture of how your body works. The pelvic floor is intricately linked with our brain, our diet, and our musculoskeletal system so looking only at the pelvic floor in isolation can be a very limited picture when trying to find the root cause of your issues.

What Conditions do we treat?

  • Urinary incontinence, frequency, and urgency

  • Pelvic pain

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Bowel issues, including constipation, hemorrhoids, and pain

  • Pain or dysfunction with intercourse

  • Prenatal rehab for back, hip, and pubic symphysis pain

  • Labor and delivery prep

  • Postpartum rehab after vaginal or cesarean birth

How do we treat the pelvic floor?

Pelvic floor interventions are tailored to fit your specific needs following your initial visit. These may include the following:

  • Spine and joint mobilization as well as soft tissue mobilization including c-section scar mobilization

  • Local exercises for the pelvic floor to global exercises for the whole body that the pelvic floor supports

  • Assessing lifestyle behaviors, like diet, sleep, and activity, and advising in modifications

  • Dry needling of the back, core, hips, and pelvic floor

What can I expect on my first visit?

On your first visit, you can expect to be evaluated in a private room where you and the PT will discuss your history, identify key areas that are impacting your symptoms, and create a plan of care to address your symptoms. Treatment is tailored to you and performed in a private room. Our physical therapist is trained in internal pelvic floor assessment and treatment but this isn’t always used as a first visit intervention. We always aim to respect your preferences and please discuss with your physical therapist if you have any concerns. We want to assist you to reach your goals however we can in your sessions.
